Reputed to be the finest and most expensive military equipment created by the Germans for WWII, one of the six remaining Tiger 1 tanks will soon be delivered to the Armor and Calvary Museum at
Fort Benning. The tank has been at Royal Air Force Alconbury, England, and is now dismantled awaiting transport. While at Fort Benning, the Tiger 1 will be fully repaired and restored.
The acquisition of the Tiger 1 is part of a long-term museum project by the Armor and Calvary Heritage Foundation that will house more than 9000 micro artifacts and 250 macro artifacts on the grounds of Fort Benning. The museum is currently in phase 1. The Heritage Foundation's goal is to promote research and development of military doctrine, policy and equipment.
Once finished, the Armor and Calvary Museum, which is adjacent to the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center, will complete the largest U.S. Army museum complex. This is part of the larger vision by the Base Realignment and Closure Commission of consolidating schools and installations to create centers of excellence, known as the Maneuver Center of Excellence.
