Sec. Gates says regulations about gays to change during military travel interview
Wednesday, July 01, 2009, 10:59:34 PM

In an interview that occurred while Secretary Robert Gates was on a military transport, he said that the Department of Defense will be looking into ways of making the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" laws more flexible.
Since it is not a policy or guideline, he told reporters that it will be up to Congress to achieve President Obama's goal of dismantling the rule, but added that his general counsel will be looking for ways to potentially decrease enforcement, according to an Armed Forces Press Service report.
He added that one scenario that the lawyers will be researching are instances where members of the military have been exposed for various reasons by a third party, wondering "does that force us to take an action?"
Talks among the Defense Leadership Council and with the president have led to calls for a "more humane" enforcement of the policy, he says.
Don't Ask, Don't Tell currently requires homosexual members of the military to not advertise their relationships, but also proscribes officials from investigations and potential discharges without evidence.
