Even though baseball season is starting to fade into football season, America's pastime captures the imagination of everyone around the country all year round. It's no surprise then that those who play the sport and those who uphold the countries ideals are fans of each other. In order to show their mutual support, several team members from the San Diego Padres recently paid a surprise visit to at
Naval Station San Diego.
Padres' catcher Nick Hundley and third baseman Chase Headley visited troops at the base on August 25th, according to The Naval Compass. It was the last Padres player appearance of the year at the base.
The annual appearances started in 1996, as a way to engage military service members at different installations for 15 seasons.
There are plenty of Padres' fans on base who regularly come to the player appearance events throughout the year, according to the news provider.
Its a great opportunity to come [to the base.] We are thankful for the military for giving us the freedom to play the game of baseball, said Hundley to the news source. They fight and put their lives on the line so we can be free."
