When president Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize several months ago, he vowed to donate the $1.4 million to worthwhile charities. This week he made good on his promise, donating his winnings to 10 different charities that support everything from Haiti relief to
military lodging.
Chief among the organizations receiving funding from the president's big win is the Fisher House Foundation, a non-profit that provides housing for the families of military personnel being treated at major veteran's affairs medical centers across the globe. The president donated roughly $250,000 to the organization.
Fisher House's chairman and CEO, Kenneth Fisher said that the organization was "thrilled and honored" to be included in the donation.
"With this additional financial support, we'll be able to do so much more to give back and give thanks to those who risk their lives for our freedom," Fisher wrote on the organization's website. "Ninety-six cents of every dollar donated to Fisher House goes directly towards program costs, but 100 percent of this contribution will go directly to supporting the Fisher Houses we're building at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Dover Air Force Base."
When asked about the charities selected to receive the funding, President Obama said that he was proud to support their work.
