Most Americans are aware of the sacrifices service members make during a war, but many do not consider what happens to these veterans once the wars are over and they are out of the military. That is why Glenn Garland created the Veteran Support Fund aiming to raise $30 million for veteran support organizations, Military Times reports.
Garland, president of an energy optimization company in Texas, introduced the fundraising campaign with his wife, children and two other families, explaining that it would go to support five groups that help veterans.
"In the last 10 to 20 years, it was pretty easy for Americans to overlook the contributions made by those veterans," Garland said at an event announcing the launch, the news outlet reports. "Every successful person in this country has enjoyed their success because of the sacrifice of someone else."
Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) and adviser to Garland for the fund, said it will establish a place where Americans can donate and know their money is going to only the best veterans groups, the news outlet reports.
"Supporting veterans isn't charity, it's an absolute necessity and an investment in our country’s future," he said.
