Camp Lejeune to get new fitness centerMarines and their families stationed at Camp Lejeune may have to deal with some construction sites around the base, but for those who are self-described gym rats, it may all be worth it.

The Wallace Creek Fitness Center will be the military installation’s newest facility that is scheduled to be completed in April 2012, according to the base.

The building may not be hard to miss, with its 103,484 square feet and will have a number of options for those looking for a workout. Once completed, the center will reportedly house two National Collegiate Athletic Association-sized basketball courts, rock climbing walls and an elevated running track.

Standard gym amenities such as a rooms dedicated to cardio equipment and a weight room will also be available.

Camp officials are also touting the environmental aspects of the new building that include bamboo flooring, solar hot water panels, matting made from recycled rubber and walls that were pade from recycled materials.

Thanks to the green characteristics of the new facility, it will be one of the few Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum facilities in the Marine Corps. Platinum is the highest LEED certification level for new construction buildings.
