Everyone seems to be going green these days. From large companies to households, more and more people are tuning to the environment and trying to do what they can to protect it.
Naval Station San Diego's green initiatives have been so successful that they even caught the eye of the Secretary of the Navy.
The eco-friendly policies recently introduced at the base earned them the Energy and Water Management award for the small shore category, according to The Navy Compass.
"We are honored to have won in such a unique way," Captain Williamson, the base's commanding officer, told the news source. "We continue to strive to be good stewards of the environment and what we save in energy and water costs provides additional funding and resources to go to our operational fleet."
Even though the San Diego installation is one of the largest bases in the Pacific region, it competed in the small shore category.
Large shore activities are bases that use more than 250,000 Million BTUs of energy during a year, according to Dennis Brazell, the base's resource efficiency manager. In the past year, the base reduced energy consumption to 248,6423 units - placing it in the small shore category.
