It's a busy time to be an active duty soldier. With two wars running simultaneously in the Middle East, soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines have been forced to endure longer and more frequent deployments in service of their country. For thousands of sailors based out of Naval Station Norfolk, that time is coming to an end as the Aircraft Carrier, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower returned from the Persian Gulf.
Nearly 5,000 sailors were aboard the vessel, which has spent the past seven months supporting ground actions in Afghanistan, according to the Daily Press. Sailors with the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group will make a stop over to NAS Oceana later in the week as well.
One of the organizations heading home aboard the ship is the Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 5 "Nightdippers," who will return to base by performing the rarely seen seven-aircraft flyover, reports WVEC.com.
Three other ships are expected to return home within the week as well including the guided-missile Cruiser USS Hue City and guided missile-destroyers the USS Carney and USS Farragut. The USS McFaul will return to Norfolk in early August.
