When serving in the field, a landmine is one of the most dangerous things that a soldier could happen upon. In an effort to increase the ability of American Military personnel to recognize and neutralize the threat of landmines, marines military police officers recently underwent a two-day mine detection course at
Camp Lejeune.
The course, which united marines with the Military Police Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, was designed to acquaint soldiers with the latest in mine sweeping equipment and detection software. Soldiers focused on basic sweep techniques, proper sweep speed and the correct operator stance, according to Dvidshub.net.
Base officials felt the training could increase the efficiency of safety measures practiced on the ground in Afghanistan.
"Afghanistan's terrain is difficult to traverse in vehicles. Dismounted patrols are mandatory [in country]. This [training] is important for Marines to learn," Sergeant Jeremy D Mitz of the 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, told the news provider. "It's a very effective course for Marines who have no prior knowledge of mine detecting. It's designed to develop a baseline to go from, but this is our job. It's what we do."
