The Pentagon is expected to request two new rounds of military base realignment and closures (BRAC) across the U.S., making
military travel imminent for many troops, Military Times reports.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to announce the rounds of BRAC as part of the Defense Department's plan to cut $487 billion from projected spending over the next 10 years, the news outlet reports. These cuts are mandated by the spending caps in the Budget Control Act.
Closing bases is expensive in the short run, which means that the projected rounds may be a "tough sell" a defense source told the news outlet.
It costs a large sum to relocate people and equipment and to shut down former facilities. However, many people see the closures a logical move since the Armed Forces are expected to cut tens of thousands of troops.
The last BRAC orders took place in 2005, and the moves that were ordered from it finished in fall of 2011. If the proposed orders go through, the first move would begin in 2013 with another round in 2015.
