Military lodging gets a major upgrade at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.Military lodging is not something many families particularly look forward to when moving to a new base, but those moving to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst may be in for a pleasant surprise. The base recently finished a housing project that was five years in the making, offering lodging that is on par with some of the nicest areas of suburbia, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

The project is part of a wider Military Housing Privatization project designed to help improve the standards of living for military members to encourage them to stay on active duty. The Military Housing Privatization Initiative was established by Congress in 1996 to address the poor conditions of Department of Defense (DoD)-owned housing and the shortage of high-quality lodging, according to its official website.

Allowing private companies to take over the renovations and rentals of on-base housing allows for faster results and savings for the DoD and the servicemember. According to the news outlet, the cost of rent for the new houses at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst depends on the servicemember's rank and is covered by his or her housing allowance.
