The United States Air Force Band performed at
MacDill AFB recently, playing certain selections that were specifically composed in honor of the Tuskegee Airmen, The Tampa Tribune reports.
During one of the band's rare public performances, they played "Red Tail Skirmish," a piece that was composed by the 50-member ceremonail brass band in honor of the Tuskegee, Airmen, the first squadron of African-American pilots. According to Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., this group was established in 1941 despite segregation laws in the U.S. Air Force. They played a vital role in World War II, proving to be some of the Air Force's most skilled pilots, the Tribune reports.
Two members of the famed squadron were in the audience at MacDill for the performance, and were each given a framed copy of the music at the end of the show, the news outlet reports.
"It is my honor to stand on the shoulder of giants and to have known so many proud Americans," Tuskegee aviator George Brown told the audience, according to the publication.
