Marines train and work to protect the country from any type of harm. While many Marines return home after their long deployments, some pass away while fighting to uphold peace and American values. Two
Camp Lejeune Marines who lost their lives in Iraq two years ago will now forever be remembered for their bravery- in a graphic novel.
Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jonathan Haerter, who served in Lejeune's 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, were controlling a entry point in Ramadi, Iraq, in 2008 when a truck detonated, reports JDNews.com. Their brave stance saved more than 50 Marines and local police located beyond the checkpoint. Their story will be told in "Sharing the Courage," a graphic novel-style comic that tells stories of heroism.
The strip started to run in Marines Magazine earlier this year, according to the news source.
The artist, Sergeant Kristopher Battles, illustrated the story of Haerter and Yale in a nine-panel page.
"What stood out was their immediate response to a dangerous situation... the youth of the two guys, they were not very old, either of them," Battles told the news source. "They didn't hesitate and they did what they were trained to do. This project has made me better appreciate how, even in this day and age, there are still regular Joe's who, when put in dangerous and trying situations, come out as honest-to-goodness heroes."
