Marines from
Camp Lejeune who made the trek out to Asheville, North Carolina, to attend a mandatory motorcycle safety training event were met with a pleasant surprise earlier in the week, as members of a local church group held a pancake breakfast for the troops to help them hit the road with full stomachs.
Around 35 volunteers from the Covenant Community Church and Skyland UMC dished out pancakes, scrambled eggs, biscuits and grits to the hungry marines participating in the four-day motorcycle training exercise that took them across the state to places like Brevard and Robbinsville in addition to the stop in Asheville.
For many of the volunteers, it was a special honor to be able to support members of the armed services.
"We just wanted to show our support to these guys for what they do for our country," Daniel Hinson, one of the volunteers, told the Citizen Times. "It truly has been a complete blessing to us. You start out wanting it to be a blessing for the guys but it turns out to always be a blessing for us."
The training exercises are seen as a way to reduce the number of injuries and deaths of military service members related to motorcycle accidents, according to base officials.
