With two active wars demanding much of the American military's time and attention, troops have been seeing longer and more frequent deployments than ever before. For more than 200 soldiers from the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, their time in the desert may be up for now, as the military men and women returned to the Washington installation at a joyous welcome home ceremony held late last week.
This latest tour, the third for the Second Infantry Division of the 3rd Brigade, saw the troops serving in Iraq for a full year. The group is only the latest group to return to Lewis-McChord as two full battalions returned in June when their base was closed as a part of the U.S.'s phase withdrawal from the country, according to The News Tribune.
As has become typical in today's modern military climate , the welcome home ceremony was a joyous affair filled with reconnections and, as is the case for Major Bob Halverson, introductions to newly born children for soldiers who have spent much time away from home.
"It's awesome. This is the best," he told the Komo News while holding his infant daughter for the first time. "This is what it's all about, family."
