Joint Base Lewis-McChord Lieutenant General Charles Jacoby has been tapped to serve as the director of the strategic plans policy section on the joint staff in Washington DC, a position he will adopt shortly after returning from Iraq later this week.
In his new role General Jacoby - who for the past year has served as the second in command for the American military serving in Iraq - will lead a staff of around 250 and be responsible for examining geopolitical trends and threats, and developing strategy and policy for the military's top officials from these findings.
The general will also now serve as a senior member of the U.S. Delegation to the United Nations Military Staff Committee, according to the News Tribune.
Jacoby will temporarily relinquish his command at Lewis-McChord to Major General J.D. Johnson, the corps deputy commanding general, until a full time replacement can be selected. Jacoby was the 62nd commanding officer of
Fort Lewis.
Around 50 soldiers from the I Corps will return with the general this weekend after a yearlong deployment in Iraq, where the soldiers oversaw day-to-day military operations.
