As the Iraqi forces grow stronger, more Marines can come homeAs the war effort continues in Iraq and Afghanistan, many Americans are wondering when the troops will finally be able to come home for good. According to one of the Marines' top commanders, it may be sooner than it looks. Marine Major General Richard Mills is now claiming that U.S. Forces, including 10,000 Marines from Camp Pendleton, are making progress in the Helmand Province.

Helmand has been one of the most fiercely contested regions in the conflict to date due to a bumper poppy crop. As such, it has been a known hiding ground for Taliban fighters and the deadliest region in Afghanistan, representing nearly 200 American casualties.

Despite these challenges, General Mills, who commands the 1st marine Expeditionary Force, recently told the LA Times that local villages are beginning to resist Taliban control and the Afghan security forces are beginning to exert control over the situation.

"I think we've seen the emergence of the people wanting to defend themselves," the happy general told the news provider.

Mills would not venture to guess a time frame, but noted that progress was being made.
