Fort Hood is helping five members of the Missouri National Guard serve their country by providing extensive combat and logistics training in advance of their deployment to Iraq.
The men are part of the 4,175th Military Police Detachment Criminal Investigation Division and are the sole members not currently serving in the Middle East due to a need for further training, according to the News Tribune. The unit is tasked with investigating felonious criminal activity overseas both within the local communities and the military itself, claims Chief Warrant Officer 2 Leif Strand, one of the remaining troops.
Strand noted that all of the men remaining have law enforcement backgrounds, and that he himself could not deploy to Iraq with the rest of the unit because he had been deployed to Afghanistan at the unit's time of departure.
Missouri governor Jay Nixon claims that these men and the National Guard at large are big assets overseas.
"The men and women of the National Guard are a vital part of our country's efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan," he told the news provider. "Our guard units are accomplishing missions to make their country and our country safer."
