Roughly 220 soldiers from the 43rd Sustainment Brigade at
Fort Carson are on their way to Afghanistan this week for a one-year deployment in service of Operation Enduring Freedom.
The combat service support unit is being deployed to bolster coalition forces in the region and improve the security of the area outside of the village of Marja. In addition to supplying a fresh crop of troops in support of the surge effort, the 43rd will be transporting essential supplies including food, ammunition and medical supplies to American, British and Afghani forces according to NBC news.
Soldiers and families gathered at the Colorado installation late Tuesday for a deployment ceremony in which command officials recognized the skills and determination of the 43rd while praising their sacrifices and commitment to their country.
"I'm so proud of what the 43rd Sustainment brigade has done, getting ready for this," said Brigadier General James Pasquarette in an address to the assembled troops at the deployment ceremony. "The Army has asked a lot of this unit, and I will tell you you're ready to go."
