As the Island nation of Haiti continues to rebuild from January's devastating earthquake, the U.S. is reducing the number of American soldiers assisting in the recovery. As such, several soldiers are returning to
Fort Bragg this week after a brief deployment that was in support of humanitarian efforts.
Soldiers from the 2nd Brigade of the 82nd Airborne recently returned to the North Carolina installation after 40 days spent in Haiti, receiving a welcome back ceremony with friends, family and Senator Kay Hagan, according to the Raleigh Telegram.
While the 82nd still has men serving on the ground, the Telegram predicts that they too could be returning in the not too distant future, as the country strengthens its presence in Afghanistan and Southeast Asia.
Soldiers from the 82nd provided food and water to victims, ran security patrols, assisted with medical relief and more to the people in the Port Au Prince area. Many soldiers are gearing up for redeployment in the coming months.
On January 12, Haiti was rocked by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake that claimed the lives of between 217,000 and 230,000 people and left roughly 1,000,000 homeless. The U.S. has been one of the most ardent responders to the catastrophe, sending military aid and millions of dollars to support the recovery effort.
