With the advent of digital cameras, the relics of war are getting more and more descriptive, as a picture truly does say 1,000 words. Troops at
Fort Bragg who have returned from deployments with digital photos are now being told to be careful with these images, the Fayetteville Observer reports.
Digital photos, in particular, have the potential to reach vast audiences, which can be beneficial and detrimental to the U.S. military, the news outlet reports. The ease of media sharing over the internet has only improved over the past decade, and the Department of Defense has no policy in place for servicemembers' use of personal cameras.
Each branch of the military must decide how to advise troops on this sensitive matter, and the Marine Corps last year released a 48-page guidebook called "The Social Corps," which governs the Marines usage of social media sites.
Officials say they do not want to crush any "esprit de corps," or sense of pride within units, but must exercise some control over what troops post in order to keep bases and soldiers safe at home and abroad.
