The new facility will assist soldiers recovering from battleThanks to a $22.4 million gift from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, Fort Benning will be the proud recipient of a new Warrior in Transition (WT) facility in the coming year.

The new facility, planned to be conveniently located near the installation's hospital, will be a 120,000-square-foot barracks, capable of housing 200 soldiers, and providing quality care for wounded soldiers returning from battle as they transition back into the service or civilian life.

"The Warrior in Transition Complex is tremendously important for the Army and for the Savannah District," Ruben Del Rio, the project manager of the Corps, told WTVM news. "These facilities honor the sacrifice of our injured and wounded warriors by providing a higher quality of life and better health care service."

While the barracks is predicted to be finished in October 2011, base officials are still anticipating the construction of a Soldier Family Assistance Center and a Battalion Company Operations Facility for the complex, though a developer for either project has yet to be chosen.

Continuing the military's commitment to sustainability, the new facility will satisfy silver rating criteria under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
