Since its introduction in 2005, the Base Realignment and Closure Act (BRAC) has seen innumerable augmentations to military installations across the country and the changes are overwhelmingly positive at
Fort Benning, as the Georgia installation braces to add up to 1,600 civilian jobs by September 2011.
The new positions - which will include a number of support service jobs like police, firemen prevention and medical operations - are due to the relocation of the U.S. Armor School to Fort Benning from Fort Knox, Kentucky, in a partnership with the U.S. Infantry School. The facility will then become the Maneuver Center of Excellence, according to the Ledger-Enquirer.
"It's going to be full-steam ahead in the next two or three quarters," Blanche Robinson, director of Fort Benning's Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, told the news provider. "Because we are growing the Maneuver Center of Excellence, of course all of the supporting activities out here that provide some type of service - in order for that service not to be degraded they're going to have to bolster their numbers as well."
Base officials predict that the new center could swell its on-base civilian ranks to 4,900 by October 2011, and uniformed personnel to 20,400 by September.
