It can be difficult for military families to be away from their loved one when they are deployed. When they return and need to be hospitalized, the separation can be just as trying. That is why the
Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is offering families a home away from home, so they can be with their loved ones during their stay in the hospital.
The hospital opened its brand new Fisher House recently, providing private suites for families of military members receiving care for an injury or illness at the hospital. The homes, which are free for all military families, have common kitchens, laundry facilities and dining rooms.
"It's more than just building houses," Ken Fisher, of the Fisher House Foundation, said at the recent opening ceremony. "It's remembering that behind each and every man or woman that wears this nation's uniform is a family. And that family serves this nation too. They make sacrifices and bear burdens that the average American has no concept of."
The Fisher House Foundation has nearly 60 homes on military bases across the U.S. and in Germany. It has provided 4 million nights of
military lodging, serving 170,000 families and saving them $180 million in
military travel and lodging expenses.
