In an effort to support the families of soldiers stationed in the Windy City, the Fisher House in Hines has announced a new program that will provide free
military lodging for the families of soldiers and veterans receiving medical treatment at the VA Medical Center.
The move was designed to allow the families of American servicemen and women to assist in a soldier's rehab without the concern of costly hotel bills that can accompany a lengthy stay. The rooms are comfortably furnished and are only a short distance to the VA Hospital, meaning that families needn't be worried about transportation costs either.
The Fisher House program is a unique private-public partnership founded by New York Real Estate mogul Zachary Fisher that supports America's military in their time of need. There are 43 Fisher Houses in the U.S., with the group's lone international location in Germany.
A group of local school children recently collected more than 500 books, toys and games and donated the materials to the facility.
"It touches the people who protect our freedoms," the children's teacher Nicole Power told WGN TV News. "They take care of us and protect our country. The children really found meaning in that."
