In an effort to support the expansion of the Marine Corps under the Grow the Force Initiative introduced by former president George W. Bush,
Camp Pendleton is in the midst of a more than $3 billion construction effort that will greatly expand base capacity over the coming years.
President Bush introduced the initiative in 2007 with the goal of bolstering the Corps' ranks to roughly 202,000 personnel members by 2011. This could further help with reducing the stress on deployable service members while providing necessary forces for success in the global war on terror, according to the Scout.
Most of the construction will yield permanent barracks that will house around 32 soldiers apiece, though due to the lengthy surveying and planning process, temporary shelters will be present to house base personnel in the meantime.
Commander Gus Lim of the Camp Pendleton Public Works Department estimates that the additions will temporarily house more than 850 marines and sailors from the 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Intelligence Battalion and the Marine Corps Air Station.
"This project is extremely important to the Marine Corps and the Marines and sailors at Camp Pendleton," Lieutenant. John J Murphy, a public works program manager, told the news source. "Improving the standard of living and morale at home is one of the commandants top priorities."
