Camp Lejeune cut the ribbon to its brand new visitor's center on Tuesday, opening the doors to a facility that is designed to improve the base's access control points and road networks, CBS affiliate WNCT 9 News reports.
The center, officially named The Main Gate Access Control Complex, is also designed to enhance customer service, making sure those who pass through have a smooth experience, Colonel Dan Lecce, Camp Lejeune's base commander, told the news outlet.
"We have a close relationship with the community and I have 10,000 family members that live on this base so it's a community within a community and we have to understand that," he told the publication. "So customer service and making things as easy as we can, understanding that you have to have security is our goal and I think this goes a long way into achieving that goal."
Lieutenant Rob Stanford told NBC affiliate WITN News that the 1,900-square foot should help visitors get through security faster when they arrive on-base.
"This is a significant improvement from what we've got right now," he told the news outlet. "The current facility, we've got four stations - and it's less than 1,000 square feet. It's going to be a lot faster moving through the process."
