Many athletes can only dream of going to the Olympics, but for one Marine from
Camp Lejeune, the dream of competing against boxers from around the world in the biggest athletic event has finally become a reality, The Camp Lejeune Globe reports.
Sergeant Jamel Herring had already earned a spot on the All-Marine Boxing Team based out of Camp Lejeune, but now he has secured a spot on the U.S. 2012 Olympic Boxing Team. His accomplishments are a far cry from where he thought he would be when he first started boxing. When he was 15, he never thought he would get anywhere beyond New York State boxing, he told the news source.
"It's taken a lot of mental preparation to get me here," Herring told the news outlet. "It's all the dedication people put in me and I put in myself to perfect my craft."
The All-Marine Boxing Team is one of many all-Marine sports teams. Marines can also compete in basketball, bowling, cross country, golf, rugby, soccer, softball, tae kwon do, volleyball and wrestling. There is also a marathon and triathlon team, according to the Marine Corps Community Services.
