Members of the U.S. Air Force stationed at
Travis AFB are among the first to experience tighter restrictions on
military travel expenses as part of a cost-cutting program expected to roll out service-wide by fall.
The new regulations are an effort to reduce government travel card abuse and delinquency by introducing a controlled spend account connected to each individual card issued by the Air Force. Spending limits will be based upon approved travel limits from command authorizations that will provide just enough funding to perform the task at hand, according to the military press.
Representatives of Citi Global Transactions, the company that primarily handles government travel cards (GTCs), claim that the new system is versatile enough to cover a soldier's needs, yet precise enough to prevent abuse.
"Over the past two decades, we've seen the Air Force's GTC program evolve from a small segment of travelers to the largest charge card program in the world with about 480,000 card holders," Charles Maddox, the air staff finance management GTC program manager, told the news provider. "Although our program is recognized as the industry benchmark in both charge volume and delinquency management, achieving this level of recognition comes at a high cost."
