By 2011,
Fort Benning will serve as host to a new Basic Training Complex as a result of a $24.3 million contract award issued by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District.
The award, which went to Tampa-based contractor Clark/Cadell Joint Venture, will see the development of a training complex comprised of two 240-bed barracks that can double as company operations facilities and associated site development including access roads, parking lots, utilities, storm sewer systems, landscaping and signage.
With the addition of the new facility, Fort Benning could see its role as a training ground expanded to involve more recruiting efforts and programs. The process could also bring a new round of jobs to the Savannah area, and help ease the Georgia's 10 percent unemployment rate.
The Army Corps of Engineers claims that the new structures will satisfy silver-level criteria established by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, rating system, in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council's standards. The training house will utilize eco-friendly building material, lighting and ventilation systems.
